This was as entertaining a match as anyone could hope for, with skills on display in abundance, plenty of goals, and a dramatic penalty shoot-out to finish it off.  Both teams displayed marvellous sportsmanship and it was deeply satisfying to see the two teams join arms in the centre-circle during the penalty shoot-out.  It’s just a pity there had to be a loser.

Hobart United suffered an early set-back when defender Ashley King had to leave the field through injury.  He was replaced by Joseph Obwona, who went on to have a considerable influence on the game.

After probing by both sides in the early stages, DOSA player-coach Dallas Joiner had the first real chance of the match when he tried his luck from range, but the ball rose just over the angle of crossbar and post.

DOSA were let off the hook in the 13th minute when Luke Temby fired tamely at Justin Farrugia, while a minute later, Brad Gilroy also shot straight at the goalkeeper.

The Hobart United back-four had to come to the rescue of their goalkeeper, Haydyn King, in the 15th minute when a chip into the box caught him out of position, but a defender managed to hack the ball clear.

A long ball out of defence by James Alimu in the 18th minute saw Brazilian striker Romilton Amaral race through the defence and deservedly put Hobart United ahead.

DOSA brought on Robbie Wilson for Jonathon Bellette in the 21st minute, but Hobart United continued to pose the greater danger, Awak Mario-Ring shooting across the face of goal in the 24th minute.

Adam Dermody’s free-kick for DOSA in the 35th minute was well saved by Haydyn King and this must have restored some of his confidence as he had been looking very shaky until then.

DOSA equalised in the 38th minute after Alimu needlessly conceded a corner.  Richard Korn’s corner was knocked back to him by defender Mario-Ring and, at his second attempt, he crossed perfectly for Derek Parry to head home.

Mario-Ring was replaced before the resumption by Benjamin Wolyan and the first half ended with Aubert Ruzigandekwe firing wide from a corner.

Three minutes after the break, DOSA missed a glorious chance to go ahead.  A misunderstanding between Alimu and Haydyn King gave possession to Wakefield , but he ran wide and made a bad angle for himself and shot wide of an open goal.

Hobart United restored their lead in the 56th minute when a brilliant ball by Ruzigandekwe put Temby away on the right and he rounded the goalkeeper before slotting home from an angle.

Two minutes later, Wakefield atoned for his earlier error, again taking advantage of a slip-up by Alimu to fire into an empty net and make it 2-2.

DOSA had a scare on the hour when Farrugia could only parry Wolyan’s shot to Temby, but his strike was blocked on the line by Adam Dermody.

Alimu was having a nightmare by this time and in the 66th minute he failed to cut out Korn’s through-ball to Wakefield .  The DOSA striker ran wide and reached the byline before crossing, when King could only parry the ball straight to Parry, who drove it into the net to give DOSA a 3-2 lead.

That was the signal for Amaral to give way to Mohammed Abdallah Mohammed and it was he who hit the DOSA crossbar in the 74th minute.

Four minutes later, Hobart United were level through a delightful goal.  Gilroy made a great run down the right and cut the ball back towards the near post, where Obwona cheekily flicked the ball home with his heel.  That had the United band in the stand fired up and their drums, triangles and saxophone must have been audible all over Glenorchy.  It certainly added cheer to a miserable, gloomy and wet afternoon.

King must really have gained confidence during the match because in the 82nd minute he produced an acrobatic leap to turn Joiner’s chip towards the top corner out for a corner.

The last notable action of normal time came in the 84th minute when Farrugia turned Ruzigandekwe’s low shot wide for a fruitless corner.

Extra-time was two minutes old when Gilroy put Hobart United ahead with a powerful shot from 25 metres.  Farrugia mishandled and the ball slithered out of his grasp and across the line.

DOSA were level ten minutes later when Joiner’s run down the left finished with a precise cross to the far side of the box, where Wakefield hit the back of the net to make it 4-4.

When Wolyan’s drive in the 106th minute was blocked by Marcus Wilde, a penalty shoot-out was inevitable.

Alimu netted from Hobart United’s first spot-kick to end his personal nightmare, but King saved Adam Dermody’s attempt for DOSA.  It looked momentarily as if Mr Williams would order the kick to be retaken, but after consulting his assistant, Mr Shumack, the referee called up United’s second penalty-taker, Festo Taban.

Farrugia saved his kick and when Wakefield netted his, it was 1-1.

Temby made it 2-1 for United before Parry scored to make it 2-2.

Ruzigandekwe and Wilson both scored to take the shoot-out to 3-3 and Wolyan’s successful kick put the pressure on DOSA at 4-3.

Derek Story was successful and made it 4-4, but Mohammed Mohammed had his effort saved by Farrugia.

Wilde then beat King to give DOSA a 5-4 victory and a place in the quarterfinals.
